Free the Hops: A Victory for Beer Appreciation

leave a comment »

Today brings good news for beer appreciators around the world.  The governor of the US state of Alabama has signed the Gourmet Beer Bill, raising the state’s maximum alcohol content for beer from 6% to 13.9%.  More details on the bill are here.

The sale of many of the world’s finest beers was apparently illegal in Alabama under the old law.   For five years, a group called Free the Hops lobbied to have the law changed.  With the signing of the bill, their hard work and dedication to the cause of freedom has paid off.  Free the Hops president Stuart Carter said:

“Bud, Miller, Corona and Coors are to beer as Velveeta is to cheese,” Carter said. “It’s a matter of consumers being able to choose what to buy. We, as people who appreciate good beer, are being denied that choice.”

Let freedom ring!
