don-newman1I was sad to read this morning that Don Newman, host of Politics on CBC Newsworld, will be retiring after decades of great TV journalism.

Television coverage of politics in Canada is fairly poor in general, but Newman’s work is an exception.  I have enjoyed Newman’s show for many years because it, more than comparable programs on other networks, avoided the personality-based, talking-heads style that dominates political reporting on television.

In addition to his classic intro (“Hello everybody, I’m Don Newman, welcome to the brooooooadcast!”),  Newman is well-known for being a strong interviewer who doesn’t allow guests (mostly politicians) to duck questions or get away with spreading disinformation.  Since I don’t like the Conservative government, my most memorable Newman moment was when he mopped the floor with John Baird over the issue of the Liberal-NDP coalition and the prorogation of parliament.

Canadians will have a harder time staying informed about politics when Newman is gone.
